Government Vows to Block Gerry Adams' Compensation Payout
The UK government is determined to prevent former Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams from receiving compensation for his unlawful detention in the 1970s. Plans to lift the ban on payouts for Troubles internees have been met with criticism from a thinktank backed by 16 peers. The Legacy Act, which currently blocks such compensation, is being repealed by Labour, despite being almost universally opposed in Northern Ireland. A Supreme Court judgement in 2020 paved the way for Mr Adams to receive damages. The government is exploring all legal avenues to prevent this payout.
