Jellyfish Swarm Dazzles Onlookers but Signals Something Wrong in the Ocean
A massive swarm of moon jellyfish in Storm Bay, Tasmania, has left scientists and onlookers in awe. But the unprecedented population growth of Aurelia aurita, or moon jellyfish, is also a cause for concern. According to biologist Lisa-ann Gershwin, this fascinating sequence began with a bloom of salps in early December, followed by an epic bloom of bioluminescent algae. While jellyfish blooming is a natural part of their lifecycle, large numbers can harm the ocean by eating the eggs and larvae of other species. Gershwin warns that this sequence of events points to something being wrong in the ocean.
