Sackler Family and Purdue Pharma Reach Historic $7.4 Billion Settlement Over Opioid Crisis
The Sackler family and Purdue Pharma, the maker of the addictive painkiller OxyContin, have agreed to a $7.4 billion settlement over their role in the opioid crisis. The settlement ends the Sacklers' control of Purdue and bars them from selling opioids in the U.S. The funds will support opioid addiction treatment, prevention, and recovery programs over the next 15 years. This comes after the Supreme Court overturned a previous deal that would have granted the Sacklers immunity from future opioid lawsuits.
This is the largest settlement with contributors to the opioid crisis in the U.S. and marks a significant milestone in the fight against the deadly epidemic.
