A horrific explosion in a residential street in Newcastle has left a child dead and four people injured. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning on Violet Close, in the Elswick area of the city. Two properties were almost completely destroyed in the fire that followed the explosion. Specialist gas engineers and search dogs were called to the scene. Northumbria Police and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service urged people to avoid the area and keep their windows and doors closed. Six people were taken to the hospital, including three adults and one child. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
