In a surprising move, Google Maps has announced that it will change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to 'Gulf of America' for users in the US once the update is officially made in the US Geographic Names System. The change is set to be visible for users in the US only, while users outside of the US and Mexico will be able to see both names. This decision comes after the US Department of Interior officially changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America last week. The US Board on Geographic Names is working expeditiously to update the names of these features in the Geographic Names Information System.
